DICOM Support with the SVX-4096 LCD Controller
Digital View’s SVX-4096 LCD controller for 4K resolution LCD panels includes support for DICOM lookup tables (LUTs), enabling calibration to the DICOM grayscale standard display function (GSDF).
What DICOM Calibration Means for Displays
DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) is a widely used standard for handling and viewing medical images. Part 14 of the standard defines the GSDF, which is specifically concerned with how grayscale tones are displayed. Although this standard addresses grayscale response, it is applied in the context of full-color displays to ensure that brightness and contrast are rendered consistently for medical imaging.
How the SVX-4096 Supports DICOM LUTs
With the SVX-4096, integrators can:
- Use a color analyzer to measure a particular LCD panel’s response.
- Generate a gamma curve LUT based on the DICOM GSDF.
- Upload this LUT into the SVX-4096 firmware via the DDC-CI channel.
- Select the DICOM LUT from the controller’s OSD settings.
Because different LCD panels vary in characteristics, calibration is panel-specific. Many current 4K LCD panels, however, are suitable for this process.
Technical Notes
- The SVX-4096 uses a 10-bit gamma LUT, requiring 6144 bytes per curve.
- Up to eight LUTs can be stored in firmware, supporting multiple calibration options.
- LUT upload is performed through the DDC-CI channel, allowing connection to a PC tool during calibration .
- Optional DDC commands support writing brightness parameters and restoring factory defaults .
Typical Uses
Adding a DICOM LUT makes the SVX-4096 suitable for display systems where compliance with DICOM calibration is required, such as:
- Radiology review and clinical workstations.
- PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System) displays.
- Any setting where consistent rendering of medical images is needed.
Summary
The SVX-4096 combines high-resolution 4K display control with the ability to support DICOM calibration. By providing a path to upload and manage DICOM LUTs, it gives manufacturers and integrators the tools to develop medical display solutions that meet DICOM grayscale requirements while retaining the full capabilities of a color LCD controller.
