New firmware increases communications potential of DMNs

Now including support for "split-screen" functionality and RSS, among other features, the latest release of the firmware at the heart of Digital View's video player technology makes large-scale DMNs more powerful and flexible than ever before.

London, 16 September 2005 Digital View has announced a major upgrade to the already powerful firmware at the heart of its video players designed for use in largescale digital media networks. Version 2.5 of DV's firmware brings even more flexibility, functionality and reliability to DMNs based on the company's established RemotePlayer and RemoteTransfer technology.

There are several new features in version 2.5 of DV's firmware, all designed to address some of the issues seen by the market as key factors in the implementation of a truly effective communications strategy. For example, split screen functionality adds a new level of flexibility by enabling programs to be made up of mixed video, JPG and news-style subtitles on the same screen, while an RSS capability allows "news subtitles", to be added, either on top of a split screen layout or on top of fullscreen video.

Other new features include the additional reporting of variables such as temperature and available memory - enhancements which help to maintain reliability and provide even more efficient remote management of players - as well as a facility to update non-connected players via USB memory keys. Further hardware support for GPRS and edge cards has been added, and the latest version of the firmware also offers enhanced video quality for players connected via the video interface (composite, SVideo).

All new Digital View players will be equipped by default with the new firmware, but the new firmware can also be used with existing players.

Editor's note - DV's connected video player (RM-DN3) technology

Unlike DVD and PC-based video player systems, which require disks and fans, the Digital View RemotePlayer video platform is based on solid-state technology, so it does not need moving parts. Its self-cooling design guarantees continual play and a long lifespan, while its low-power requirements are deliverable from existing lighting fixtures. Unlike most PC-based applications, the product’s non-Windows operating system requires no expensive software licenses. Offering standard, scheduled or looped playback options, it has NTSC and PAL-compliant outputs and is capable of driving any size of TFT LCD, plasma or CRT screen.

The product's compact design means that it can easily be incorporated into an application with custom housings, and a range of accessory options are available, including interactive touchscreen, audio motion sensors and barcode control for the control of promotional messages.
