Digital View has introduced a version of its RemotePlayer 3™ (RP3) digital video player which now features a specially designed GPRS interface. By doing so, the company has not only made
digital media networks more powerful and cost-effective than ever before, but has opened the door to a new range of commercial opportunities for companies which are using telematics technology,
such as vending machine operators.
The immense marketing potential of remotely updateable, out-of-home advertising and digital signage is now well understood by media owners, retailers and distributors. For many, however, the
costs and lack of flexibility involved in a solution based on a fixed-line infrastructure can be prohibitive, while wireless solutions can be slow, unreliable and expensive. The new Digital View product
is designed to address these issues. At the same time, it extends the commercial viability of digital signage into a new sphere of applications.
GPRS is a 2.5G wireless communications technology which can transfer data at the equivalent speed of a fixed-line and ten times the speed of GSM. With very high connection availability, it is
also an “always-on” (no dial-up), “pay as you go” technology. This means that not only are connection times fast, but that the cost to users is a function of the amount of data transferred, not the
length of time connected. By adding a GPRS interface to its RemotePlayer 3, Digital View can now offer, for the first time, remotely-updateable digital media networks with no installation or connection
costs, and at a fixed usage rate. DV, in partnership with T-Mobile, has already developed a range of specialised data packages based on this approach.
These, however, are not the only benefits of the latest version of Digital View's RemotePlayer 3. Because the company has designed the modem in the product specifically for GPRS, it offers
significantly better performance characteristics than other products of its genre, including higher than average data transmission speeds (up to 50Kbps), and an extremely stable connection.
The result is a system which can handle the large files typical of MPEG videos. For example, Digital View is already effecting uploads of 100MB in single, overnight transfers. The system also offers
a powerful “store forward” data transfer capability which allows users to upload new content files at the same time that an existing file is running. In other words, users can upload tomorrow’s content
while today’s is live.
The GPRS capability of RP3 also offers "parallel functionality" advantages to companies which implement telematics technology in their products, such as vending machine operators.
These companies can use the telematic signal capability of their products to support the RP3. This means that the potential of digital video messaging can be leveraged at marginal extra cost.
